6/6/2026 Posted On: 6/8/2026 By: emilyuu Info: Arrived around 9pm on a Friday and campsites 1-7 were full. Road is in great shape the entire way; no snow until ~12,500' and even then it's partially covered. The creek crossing at ~10,500' looked to be 1.5-2ft deep, which we didn't feel comfortable crossing in our Outback so we camped at Site 8/9. Without the creek crossing, we would have easily made it to the ~11,400' Pearl Pass junction.
5/15/2026 Posted On: 5/16/2026 By: TateMarshall Info: Road is in great shape all the way to the junction. Made it to around 11,300, maybe slightly higher in a Volvo xc60 with all weather tires with no issue. Stopped where a deep snow bank covered the entire road just before another creek crossing. First creek crossing was pretty high on the way down around 1pm but sent it with no issues (9.4 inches of clearance in off-road mode). | 1 |

10/7/2025 Posted On: 10/8/2025 By: PaulineAnna Info: Trail was clear & dry all the way to the highest parking area, but I parked my Ranger FX4 near the Pearl Pass junction because I really don't enjoy 4wheeling. With skill and a high clearance 4x4 you can still make it all the way to the top. I was mostly worried about the creek crossing because I didn't know what to expect, but even in the afternoon with lots of snowmelt runoff the water was only a couple of inches deep. | 1 |

9/14/2025 Posted On: 9/15/2025 By: TateMarshall Info: Made it all the way to the highest parking lot in a stock Volvo XC60 with all-weather tires without scraping. The guys in modded out 4Runners were not terribly happy with me lol. It was slow going and there were some moments of traction loss but by picking my line carefully I didn't have any issues, even in the dark.
8/23/2025 Posted On: 8/23/2025 By: paigemoney Info: The road is actually worse down low than on most of the upper stretches. I drove in Friday during a storm and wished I had gone farther, since we ended up hiking a lot more than necessary. There are good camping spots to pitch a tent around 11,400–11,500 feet. In my stock Wrangler, I would have been comfortable stopping around 12,100 feet. Beyond that, on the next switchback, the road becomes super narrow with a few large rocks to navigate.

7/26/2025 Posted On: 7/26/2025 By: aldsw Info: The bridge issue referenced below did impact our drive. We drove up to about 11,400 and easily could have made it all the way up in our Chevy Colorado but wanted to camp at treeline. It's a rough drive but no problem for a vehicle with good clearance, even saw a Subaru Outback up around camp 7 or 8. We arrived around 7pm on Friday night and all the lower camps were completely full. | 2 |

7/16/2025 Posted On: 7/16/2025 By: HikerGuy Info: From the White River National Forest FB page: Pearl Pass Bridge Advisory – Use Caution Pitkin County staff recently inspected the Pearl Pass Bridge, located near the Pearl Pass trailhead, and found that several deck timbers are in poor condition—one has a visible hole. We urge travelers to use caution when crossing the bridge. Solo drivers may have difficulty judging placement due to the steep approach; we strongly encourage the use of a spotter to safely guide vehicles across. If you are unsure about crossing safely, we recommend parking before the bridge and walking across first to assess the condition and plan your route. If you do park, please ensure there is enough space for other vehicles to pass—this is a narrow backcountry road and access must remain open. Pitkin County Engineering/Road and Bridge is prioritizing a full deck replacement in the coming weeks to restore safety. As always, use caution when traveling in remote areas. Road and bridge conditions can change quickly due to weather, erosion, or age. Drive slowly, be prepared for unexpected hazards, and use spotters when needed—especially at narrow crossings. Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain safe and reliable access to this rugged and beautiful area. We’ll provide updates as soon as the schedule is confirmed. | 1 |

7/12/2025 Posted On: 7/12/2025 By: pthomps17 Info: Made it to campsite 7 in my Subaru Forester. Did not scrape and didn’t feel I was in danger of damaging my car in any way. Was not a big deal as long as you have some experience on rough roads!
7/8/2025 Posted On: 7/8/2025 By: wwdonaldson Info: Was able to take a Chevy Trailblazer all the way to campsite #6. Basically any 4WD or AWD car can make it to 6 and 7. A Subaru made it to 8 and 9. Someone took their Nissan Frontier to the end of the road or about 12,800 ft. Wouldn’t recommend but it’s worth possible. |
